163 "Timothy Mather was the only son of the emigrant that grew up to manhood who was not a preacher and is called the "Mather farmer" of the early time, and settled in the town with his father. His brothers Samuel and Nathaniel went back to Europe and were noted preachers. Eleaser was the first minister in Northampton, Mass., where he died the same year his brother, Rev. Dr. Increase, settled in Boston. Timothy had a fall in his barn, which resulted in his death at the age of 56 years. Maj. Gen. Humphrey Atherton, his father-in-law, was a distinguished man in the colony. They are buried in "Upham's Corner Cemetery."

"All persons in this country by the name of Mather who descend from the New England Mathers can be traced directly to Timothy Mather, as the name ceases in all the other lines with Samuel Mather, the grandson of Rev. Dr. Cotton Mather. Samuel Mather died in 1813. Many Mathers in this country claim descent from Rev. Dr. Cotton Mather, but they are mistaken. ...The Mathers now are from the three grandsons of Rev. Richard, who settled in Connecticut, Rev. Samuel (of Windsor branch), Richard (of Lyme branch), or Atherton (of Suffield branch)." Horace Mather

In his will Rev. Richard states: "in as much as he (Timothy) hath not had so much cost bestowed upon him in his education...I have some years since given and assured to him in land, meadows, barn and other buildings, cows, oxen, bedding, household stuffe...also all my house, barne, buildings, lands, in Dorchester for his use during his natural life."

Buried in Dorchester North Burying Ground, Upham's Corner.

179 (from Brigitte Meyer-Junghans)
Today I talked to Edith Mühlhause, born Junghans, who still lives in Vockerode. She shares the same great grandfather Christoph with you.

... Christoph's wife Catharina Elisabeth prefered 1848 to stay with her two little sons in Vockerode, when Christoph decided to go to the "new world". So he emigrated alone, because he had no work as shriner. The couple was not decided [divorced?]. The family thought that he was surely dead because they never heard anything from him.... In that times a lot of people was poor and without work in the "good old europe".

189 (from paper dated Sept. 3, 1850)
Died at San Diagonia, Lower California, on the 7th of April last, of the mountain fever, terminating in dysentery, Wm. Barry Mather, aged 18 years, formerly of Adrian in this State, but more recentlyof Cincinnati, Ohio. The deceased was endeared by uncommonly strongties of friendship to a large circle of acquaintances -- the zealouspromoter of all the benevolent objects of the day -- a memberof the Presbyterian Church, and the only child and idol of Mrs.E. Ross, Cincinnati. He left that city in the spring of 1849 incompany of his uncle, C.N. Ormsby, and others of that place, forCalifornia by the overland route. The letter from Dr. Ormsby containingthe above sad intelligence, dated Los Angeles, April 2nd representedhimself as in good health, but depressed in spirits in consequenceof fatigue and anxiety.

196 (Information from Mary Clark OCallaghan)
Loretta went by Nellie or Nell as a child, Loretta as an early adult, Helen in later years and Reata H Brogan is on her obit in The Flint Journal paper in 1971. (Oct 17, 1971) She is buried in Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, and William at Avondale Cemetery in Flint Michigan. Even before William died, Loretta hooked up with a man named Roy Brogan. He didn't want her children, so Loretta pawned her children off to family member in other states. My mother and her siblings did not reconnect until they were adults, in their 30's, much of the family history is not known to them. Eddie never returned to Michigan and had nothing to do with the Mathers family after being given away as a child.

198 (Madison Co., Indiana) county histories credit Hannah Ellsworth as being the first white girl married in the county, this being in 1821, Madison Co. not only included most of the present territory but all of Hancock Co. also. I am pretty well convinced that the first white settlement in this region (which covers a territory of some 20 or 30 miles radius around Pendleton) was along Fall Creek, near the Falls at Pendleton. The Ellsworth entry is dated November 9, 1822, and is located 3 1/2 miles northeast of the Falls. Ellsworth, Hannah (I8859)
