| 2919 | From the Brattleboro Reformer Brattleboro, Windham County, VT: Mrs. Cotton Mather, 78, died yesterday shortly after noon in her home in this village after an illness of only a few days, with double pneumonia. She was born in Westminster, Oct. 22, 1839, and was one of eight children of Whitney and Fanny (Smith) Whitaker and was the last survivor of her father's family. Her maiden was Seraph P. Whitaker. Her mother's father, Major Ephriam Smith, was a Revolutionary soldier who assisted in guarding Major John Andre after the latter was captured. Mrs. Mather lived in Newfane when she was a child, and the family moved from there to Wilmington. When she was 17 years old she went to Marlboro to live and it was there that she met Mr. Mather. They were married in West Brattleboro June 1, 1858, by Rev. Joseph Chandler. Mr. Mather, who was a farmer and stone mason, died in December, 1912. Four years before his death, in 1908 Mr. and Mrs. Mather celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Mather leaves three daughters and one son. They are Miss Seraph Annette Mather, and Helen A. wife of W.E. Chase, both of West Brattleboro, Mrs. Harriet F. Newcomb of Brattleboro and George E. Mather of East Orange, N.J. A son, Myron I. Mather, died last July. Several grandchildren also survive. She had been a member of the First Congregational church many years and was interested in all its activities. The funeral will be held in the First Congregational church tomorrow at 3 o'clock, Rev. H.H. Shaw of Marlboro officiating. The burial will take place in the West Brattleboro Cemetery. | Seraph P. Whitaker

Betty grew up in Vermont and graduated from Brattleboro Union High in 1942. She was married to James R. Aiken and raised her two children in the small Vermont community before moving to California with her family in 1960. She was employed at the Aerospace Corp until she retired in 1987. | 2936 | Eunice WILLIAMS was only 8 years old when she was captured. Her mother was killed as was her 6 year old brother & 6 week old sister. She was literally carried all the way to Canada in the snow by her captor. Her father & 4 siblings were over a period of years ransomed. However, the family that had her, refused to part with her even when goverments intervened. It is clear that she had some special quality that caused all who knew her to love her. She converted to Catholicism & at a young age married a Mohawk. I think it was religion that separated her from her white family. She, her husband & children even visited her birth family after her father died. | Eunice Williams
